Known as Al Jazirah, aka ‘The Island’, on account of being sandwiched between the White and Blue Nile’s, Central Sudan was once the hub of the medieval empire of Sennar and continues to be the agricultural heart of the country today.
Kosti
Kosti takes its name from the Greek merchant who had a trading post here in the 19th century. The good-natured town offers bird watching opportunities and a chance to explore the banks and fields along the river.
Aba Island
A small island, only a 14 km-long strip, with a big significance, Aba island is the spiritual home of the Mahdist movement. The palatial Al Mahdi family house is now the Faculty of Law of the Imam Al Mahdi University, while on the west side of the island you’ll find Ghar Al Mahdi, where the Mahdi himself once taught.
Pro-tip: Aba is known for its fish, fried and eaten with bread and lemon. You’ll find it in the small souk behind the university.
Sennar
A quiet agricultural town on the Blue Nile that just so happens to represent another little-known page in Sudan’s history when it was the capital of the Funj Kingdom, also known as the Blue Sultanate.
Wadi Medani
Another popular, laidback honeymoon destination for the Sudanese with a pleasant location on the Blue Nile.
