Bayuda Desert

  • Bayuda Desert

A geological wonderland hugged by a giant loop in the Nile just north of Khartoum, Bayuda Desert is 300 square kilometers of acacia forests, classic sand sheets, green wadis and Dorcus gazelle prancing through savanna plains.

The cultural importance of the Bayuda desert is a big draw as well, for this is the place that the Bisharin, descendants of the ancient Bejawi people, call home, along with other Bedouin tribes. In addition, the desert marks the southern half of what was once Nubia, and going back even further in time, recent rock art findings suggest that Egyptian-Nubian civilizations were preceded by complex Neolithic societies.
